Allah (swt) says:
وَ مِنْ ءَايتِهِ خَلْقُ السَّمَوتِ وَالأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَفُ أَلسِنَتِكُمْ وَ أَلْوَنِكُم إنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَأَيتٍ للْعَلَمِينَ.
“And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the variations in your languages and your colours. Verily in that are signs for those who know.”
(Surah Ruum: verse 22)
Al-Hidayah’s Cultural Museum
Learners at Al-Hidayah hosted an in-house Al-Hidayah Cultural Museum, showcasing artefacts of cultural significance to our learning community full of wondering and discoveries
as part of our acknowledgement of Languages Week (August 1-7).
How do we say chatter in other languages?
Gevezelik (Turkish) – Obrolan (Indonesian) – Chehchana (Urdu) -Gumzo (Swahili) – لَغو (Arabic)
Our learning experience began at the museum entrance with ‘entry tickets’ to the museum encouraging visitors to practice the use of another language in their communication with the exhibitors and artists.
Learners were invited to practice being effective communicators in interacting with museum visitors using their bilingual chatterboxes.
Budding researchers were given opportunities to interact with our ‘learner artefact exhibitors’, to discover the use of artefacts and their familial significance while also sharing their individual artefact wonderings.
“I wonder if we will return to a time when our artefacts will be used again?”
“I wonder how it is made and the significance of the designs?”
Our ‘Arabic calligraphists’ were on hand to explain the different styles of Arabic calligraphy and the connections between coffee & calligraphy.
The process of calligraphy on pottery was explained to our curious visitors by the ‘Mosaic and Pottery Arabic calligraphists.’
Museum visitors were also invited to ‘Guess how many languages were spoken at Al-Hidayah?’
Submissions of languages spoken at Al-Hidayah Islamic School estimates varied from 2653 to 14.
According to recent data, Al-Hidayah has 15 languages spoken in our Al-Hidayah Islamic School bilingual community.
We would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to our contributors who shared their artefacts with our learners.
Alhamdulillah, it was a rich learning experience for all.
